INGLEWOOD, Calif. (June 10, 2009) — Doug O’Neill, who saddled Classical Slew to win the first 2-year-old stakes race of the meet a week ago, will try to win the first juvenile filly stakes race Thursday with Repo and Southern Fireball in the $70,000 Cinderella.
O’Neill, who sent out stablemates Classical Slew and Track N Attack to finish first and sixth, respectively, in the Willard L. Proctor Memorial, leads the trainers’ standings with 22 wins through 31 racing days. Seven of the victories have come in 2-year-old races.
Southern Fireball, a daughter of Southern Image, will be ridden by Rafael Bejarano, who combined with O’Neill to win the 2008 Cinderella with Trifecta King. She will try to avenge a defeat to Well Deserved, who was impressive while winning her career debut here May 1 with Southern Fireball 1 ¾ lengths back in third.
The Cinderella, which will be run for the 47th time, drew a field of eight, which lines up as follows from the rail out:
Nana Boo, with Agapito Delgadillo, carries 120 pounds; Champagne d’Oro, Martin Garcia, 115; Southern Fireball, Rafael Bejarano, 120; Ridemetothemoon, Michael Baze, 117; Well Deserved, Joel Rosario, 120; Repo, Corey Nakatani, 120, and Gale Schoonover, rider to be named, 117.
The Cinderella will run as the seventh race on Thursday’s eight-race program. First post time is 1 p.m.
