Overnight Purses Hiked For Upcoming Spring/Summer Meet
INGLEWOOD, Calif. (April 18, 2011)—The Spring/Summer meet at Hollywood Park, which begins with an eight race program Thursday, will see an increase in overnight purses from the 2010 season.
Overnight purses for the 54-day meet will be range from $290,000-$300,000 per day, a boost of between 16-20% over last year, according to Martin Panza, Hollywood Park’s racing secretary and vice president-racing.
Examples of the boosts include a first level condition allowance for sprinters now offers a $52,000 purse, $9,000 more than 2010, and starter allowance sprints for winners of maiden races with a maximum claiming price of $40,000 – or $50,000 for California breds – is now $35,000, a rise of $10,000 from a year ago.
Maiden races on turf feature a $50,000 purse, up from $42,000 and purses for claiming horses – such as the $12,500, $16,000 and $20,000 plateaus – have also been raised.
“ The increases in purses for claiming horses can help keep an owner in business,’’ said Panza. “Someone can claim a horse for, say $12,500, win a race and be out on the claim. This could lead to an increase in horse inventory and stimulate more business.’’
