INGLEWOOD, Calif. (Dec. 18, 2009) — Pacesetter Red Sun, making his first start against winners, shook off Aquicksting at the top of the stretch and drew off with little urging from jockey Rafael Bejarano to win Friday’s $40,000 allowance/optional claiming feature at Hollywood Park by four lengths.
The victory was the second straight for Red Sun, who finished second in his career debut in January and returned ten months later to break his maiden. He was so full of run, Bejarano had trouble pulling him up after the finish as he missed the gap om the backstretch and was a little late getting back to the winner’s circle.
Red Son, a homebred owned by Harris Farms and trained by Carla Gaines, set all the fractions while covering one mile on the Lakeside Turf Course in 1:35.19 to improve his record to two-for-three.
The 8-5 second choice in the field of seven, Red Sun paid $5.20, $2.60 and $2.80. Favorite Tamarack Smarty returned $2.60 and $2.40, while the show payoff on Renegade Storm was $3.40.
Joe Talamo rode three winners Friday, while Bejarano rode two.
