Owner J. Paul Reddam, whose consumer loans company sponsors the $750,000-guaranteed CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park December 17, would like to keep the winner’s share in his own pocket.

Reddam plans to start both Handsome Mike, purchased privately after a second-place finish in the Generous Stakes Sunday, and Basmati, runner-up in the Delta Downs Jackpot Stakes in Louisiana November 19 for his wife Zillah, in the Grade I test at 1 1/16 miles on Cushion Track.

Doug O’Neill trains both colts for Reddam and said that Corey Nakatani, who won the race last year on Comma to the Top, would probably return on Basmati.

Reddam has been close in the Futurity on two previous occasions: second with Liquidity in 2006 and third with Wilko in 2004.

“Basmati is a real talented high-energy horse who should have a bright 3-year-old campaign ahead of him,” said O’Neill.

Other probable starters include a Bob Baffert-trained quartet of Liaison, So Brilliant, Sky Kingdom and Secret Circle, a Jerry Hollendorfer-conditioned duo of Longview Drive and Rousing Sermon, Empire Way and Maryland shipper Lucky Chappy.

SUPPLEMENTARY ENTRIES TO PAD STARLET

Four probable supplementary entries are expected for the $250,000-guaranteed Hollywood Starlet Stakes, a Grade I test for 2-year-old fillies at 1 1/16 miles on Cushion Track December 10.

Sharp Cat Stakes winner Charm the Maker, Sharp Cat runner-up Killer Graces, Moccasin Stakes winner Made to Love Her and Self Preservation—fourth-place finisher in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies—are all expected to join the lineup for the 31st running of the Starlet.

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer, who trains Killer Graces, is also expected to start Milania, a recent maiden winner, according to assistant Dan Ward.

The Starlet is expected to be headed by Weemissfrankie, winnner of the Grade I Del Mar Debutante and Oak Leaf Stakes and third-place finisher in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies.

“She had a beautiful gallop this morning and will work Saturday,” said Peter Eurton, trainer of Weemissfrankie, who will be ridden by two-time Starlet winner Rafael Bejarano. Joel Rosario will ride Self Preservation, and Garrett Gomez will be aboard Charm the Maker.

TRIO OF TRAINERS AWAITS HOLLYWOOD DEBUTS

Trainers Dan Blacker, Francesco Santella and Michael Ewing are all looking forward to their first Hollywood Park starts this week.
For Blacker, who entered All de Victors in the fourth race today, it will be the first start of his career.

“I’ve been around horses all my life,” said the 29-year-old native of England from a stall in Barn 54 Thursday while holding a horse being shod.

“I did a program with Darley Stud (Darley Flying Start Program) in 2007.

“I did a work placement with Richard Mandella and he offered me a job to come back, and I worked for him for 1 ½ years at Santa Anita,” continued Blacker. “Then I worked for Tom Albertrani on the East Coast for 2 ½ years.”

Blacker credited Jamie Lloyd for his return. “I owe it all to Jamie,” said Blacker. “I came back to California when Jamie quit training here to concentrate on his bloodstock business in England. Jamie put in a good word with some of his owners, and they were kind enough to give me a shot with three of their horses. Jamie bought two others at Tattersalls, so I have five altogether.”

Two horses with Blacker that Lloyd previously trained are stakes-placed Hameildaeme, entered in the first race Saturday, and Fantastic Pick, winner of the 2010 Oak Tree Derby nearing a start here this month.

For Santella, who entered Coal Region Kid in the third race today, it will mark his first start in the United States.

Santella explained in broken English from Barn 53 that he moved to California two months ago from his native Italy, where he won about 100 races. “Not much money in Italy,“ explained Santella of the move.

Santella, 33, said that he and his father, Salvatore, boast more than 40 years in the training business between them.

“I trained Miss Vegas before she came here to Bobby Frankel,” said Santella of the stakes filly. Santella said that he has five horses here, four yearlings from Keeneland that are being broken and 24 horses in Italy, some of which will join the stable here next year.

Santella explained that his owner, Vegas Racing Team, is made of a group of Italian restaurateurs who have restaurants in Rancho Palos Verdes, Huntington Beach and Las Vegas. Jeopardy Lady, a filly he trains for Vegas Racing Team, is entered in the first race Saturday against the Blacker-trained Hameildaeme.

For Ewing, who entered June Cleaver in the ninth race Saturday, it will be her first start at Hollywood Park.

Ewing, long-time assistant to Bob Hess Jr. on this circuit before striking out on her own, trains eight horses here, including Song Girl, who provided her with her first victory at Keeneland this year. Song Girl is entered in Sunday’s ninth race.

Ewing, based in Barn 50 North, will have to rely on French-born assistant Sebastian Pain while she endures the pain of hip-replacement surgery two days ago.

June Cleaver will be making her first start in a 2-year-old filly maiden race. The filly is out of Believeittobeaver and is named after the mother of Beaver Cleaver in the old “Leave It To Beaver” television series.

FINISH LINES—Director of racing Martin Panza was happy to report that the solid cinderblock and aluminum barns withstood the ferocious winds that wreaked havoc throughout Southern California Wednesday night and no damage was reported in the stable area…Horses hope to follow in their mother’s footsteps here in stakes races this weekend. The well-traveled Eldaafer, out of 2001 Hollywood Starlet winner Habibti, seeks to win the $100,000 Native Diver Handicap in his first start at this track Saturday. Miss Mittagong, out of 2001 A Gleam Handicap winner Go Go, seeks her first graded stakes win in the $150,000 Bayakoa Handicap Sunday…Jockey Chantal Sutherland will be in her native Canada this weekend to ride at Woodbine during closing weekend of the Ontario racing season. She has stakes mounts on Awesome Fire in the Ontario Lassie Saturday and Harrod’s Creek in the Valedictory Sunday.
