INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 4, 2012)—Shortening up after consecutive routes, Reneesgotzip remained undefeated in races around one turn with a gate-to-wire victory in the $57,000 feature Friday (video) at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Runner-up in a pair of Grade I’s at Santa Anita – the Las Virgenes and Santa Anita Oaks – in her most recent outings, the 3-year-old City Zip filly won for the third time sprinting for the Lanni Family Trust and trainer Peter Miller.
Ridden by apprentice Eswan Flores, the 7-10 favorite in the field of five quickly established command after breaking from the inside and wasn’t seriously menaced en route to a 2 ¼ length victory. The final time for the 6 ½ furlongs over Cushion Track was 1:16.66.
The win was the second in as many starts at Betfair Hollywood Park for Reneesgotzip, who has earned $261,200 in five races. She defeated maidens by 2 ¼ lengths in her debut last Dec. 18.
Bred in Kentucky by John Liviakis, Reenesgotzip, who was facing older rivals for the first time, returned $3.40, $2.40 and $2.10.
Glamorista, who provided Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert with his 500th win at Betfair Hollywood Park last July 4, was second as the 2-1 second choice. The 5-year-old Unbridled’s Song mare, who finished a half-length in front of Spectacular Sky, paid $2.60 and $2.10. The show price on Spectacular Sky was $2.10. Customer Base and Versailles Song completed the order of finish.
Racing resumes Saturday. Post time is 11 a.m.
The early post time is in conjunction with the simulcast of the 138th Kentucky Derby from Churchill Downs. Gates will open at 7 a.m. at Betfair Hollywood Park and the first import from Churchill Downs goes at 7:30 a.m.
Post time for the Derby is 3:24 PDT, so it will be shown locally between the eighth and ninth races.
The main event on the 11 race card is the $150,000 Mervyn LeRoy Handicap, a Grade II for older horses at 1 1/16 miles over Cushion Track. Morning Line, the winner of the Grade I Carter in 2011 at Aqueduct, will make his first start as a 5-year-old in the LeRoy, the first prep for the $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup July 7.
The other Saturday stakes are the $70,000 Cool Frenchy for older horses at five furlongs and the $100,000 Senorita for 3-year-old fillies at one mile on turf.
