INGLEWOOD, Calif. (October 10, 2012)—Rousing Sermon, runner-up in the Grade I CashCall Futurity last Dec. 17 at Betfair Hollywood Park, is among eight scheduled to run in the $175,000 Lava Man California Cup Classic Saturday at Santa Anita.
Run at 1 1/16 miles, the Classic is the signature event of the California Cup, a series of races restricted to horses bred or sired in the state. Scheduled post time for the Classic, which is the ninth of 10 races, is 5:08 p.m. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 10:15 a.m. for simulcasts.
Owned by breeders Mr. and Mrs. Larry D. Williams and trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer, Rousing Sermon will be seeking his first win of 2012 Saturday. The 3-year-old son of Lucky Pulpit is winless in seven starts this year, including a fourth place finish in the Grade II Super Derby Sept. 8 at Louisiana Downs.
Successful in two of 13 lifetime with earnings of $477,000, Rousing Sermon will race without blinkers for the first time since he finished third in the Graduation Stakes Aug. 3, 2011 at Del Mar.
The likely favorite in the Classic is John Scott, who was a two-time winner over Cushion Track during the Spring/Summer meet. Owned by breeder Harris Farms, Inc. and trained by Carla Gaines, the 5-year-old gelded son of Bertrando won an optional claimer at seven furlongs May 26, then stretched to 1 1/16 miles and defeated 2009 Hollywood Gold Cup winner Rail Trip in a $66,338 allowance June 28.
