INGLEWOOD, Calif. (May 23, 2013)—Schiaparelli, runner-up to 2012 Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint champion – and stablemate – Mizdirection in the Las Cienegas Stakes last month, will try for her second win over the Betfair Hollywood Park grass in the $70,000 Great Lady M. Stakes Sunday.

A six furlong event for older fillies and mares, the Great Lady M. is the seventh of nine races. Post time Sunday is 1 p.m. Track gates will open at 9:55 a.m. for simulcasts.

Trained by Mike Puype for breeder Ran Jan Racing, Inc., Schiaparelli was defeated by a half-length by Mizdirection in the Grade III April 13 at Santa Anita. She was collared near the wire after having a two length lead with an eighth of a mile to run.

A 5-year-old gray daughter of Ghostzapper and the Avenue of Flags mare Cambiocorsa, Schiaparelli has won three of seven and earned $140,864. Two of her starts have come over the Betfair Hollywood Park turf. She broke her maiden by 2 ½ lengths in her debut June 19, 2011, then was third in the Cool Air Stakes last Nov. 23. Both races were at the Great Lady M. distance.

Trainer Tom Proctor will send out the duo of Customer Base and Purim’s Dancer.

Owned by breeder Glen Hill Farm, Customer Base is cutting back in distance for her first start of 2013. She has been away since finishing second in the Autumn Miss – a Grade III at one mile – last Oct. 27 at Santa Anita.

A 4-year-old Lemon Drop Kid filly out of the Tale of the Cat mare Little Cat Feet, Customer Base has won three of 10 and earned $144,808.

Purim’s Dancer is also trying a shorter trip after finishing fifth in the Grade III Wilshire Handicap April 28. The Purim filly was defeated by 2 ¾ lengths by Halo Dolly in the contest at one mile.

Out of the City Zip mare Zip City, Purim’s Dancer, who is owned by Doug Donnelly, Corey Johnsen, Lenny Kohn and Gene McLean, has won half of her eight starts and banked $131,960.

Hall of Fame jockey Gary Stevens, fresh off his upset victory aboard Oxbow in the Preakness Stakes, has the call on Purim’s Dancer. Stevens, who is seventh all-time at Hollywood Park with 1,274 victories, will be seeking his first local stakes win since capturing the 2005 A Gleam Invitational Handicap with Alphabet Kisses.

Curvy Cat returns to grass for owner-breeder Debi and Tom Stull’s Tommy Town Thoroughbreds after winning the B. Thoughtful Stakes over Cushion Track on April 27, California Gold Rush Day.

Trained by Hall of Famer Jerry Hollendorfer, Curvy Cat has won seven of 15. The 4-year-old daughter of Ministers Wild Cat and the Distorted Humor mare Curvy Girl has earned $241,373.

Givine will try to end a 15-race losing streak for owner Marsha Naify and trainer Julio Canani. The 6-year-old French bred hasn’t won since taking the 2011 Great Lady M.

A daughter of Blackdoun and the Double Bed mare Viguerie, Givine is 6-for-25 lifetime with a bankroll of $255,530.

Greatest Escape will be making her first start outside Northern California for owner-breeder Robert Padilla and trainer Jeff Bonde.

The 5-year-old Game Plan mare has won four of six competing at Golden Gate Fields and Pleasanton. Out of the Devil His Due mare Mephista, Greatest Escape has earned $92,290.

She is 1-for-1 on turf, defeating maidens by a neck first time out at five furlongs June 2, 2012 at Golden Gate.

Bonde will be trying to become the first trainer to win the Great Lady M. in consecutive years. He saddled Mega Dream for an upset victory over Mizdirection in 2012.

From inside out, the field for the Great Lady M. Stakes: Purim’s Dancer, Gary Stevens rides, 120 pounds; Greatest Escape, Edwin Maldonado, 116; Givine, Martin Garcia, 116; Customer Base, Garrett Gomez, 116; Curvy Cat, Corey Nakatani, 122 and Schiaparelli, Joe Talamo, 118.
