INGLEWOOD, Calif. (June 18, 2009) — Scorewithcater, who beat eventual Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird by a neck in the Borderland Derby at Sunland Park in February, returns to Hollywood Park for Saturday’s $100,000 Affirmed Handicap.
Now flirting with Grade III company in the Affirmed, Scorewithcater ran in the claiming ranks here last fall, finishing second for a tag of $50,000 before being claimed for $40,000 by Robert Master from a winning effort.
He has finished ahead of the Kentucky Derby winner twice since then. Following the Borderland Derby victory, the son of Even the Score finished third in the $900,000 Sunland Park Derby, a neck in front of Mine That Bird in fourth.
Scorewithcater, a winner of four of ten starts and $233,720, tested Grade II company in his last outing, finishing fifth in the Peter Pan over 1 1/8 miles at Belmont Park in May. He will break from the five-post under Joseph Talamo in the 1 1/16-mile Affirmed, which lines up as follows:
Misremembered, with Victor Espinoza up, carries 114 pounds; Grazen, Rafael Bejarano, 114; Cape Truth, Alonso Quinonez, 114; Quindici Man, Joel Rosario, 114; Scorewithcater, Talamo, 116, and Fiddlers Afleet, Martin Garcia, 113.
Doug O’Neill, the trainer of Scorewithcater, will also saddle lightly-raced Cape Truth. The son of Cape Town has won two of four starts. Most recently, he finished fifth in the Lone Star Park Derby.
Grazen, trained by Mike Mitchell for Nick Alexander, has won two straight races at Hollywood Park since finishing tenth in his career debut last fall. The California-bred son of Benchmark won the NTRA Stakes on Gold Rush Day before beating open company in an allowance race at 1 1/16 miles in May.
Misremembered, a son of Candy Ride trained by part-owner Bob Baffert, is also two-for-three.
Quindici Man, a son of 2002 Affirmed winner Came Home, has won three of 11 starts while finishing second on four occasions. In his most recent start, the Craig Lewis-trained colt finished fifth in the Lazaro S. Barrera Memorial Stakes.
Fiddlers Afleet, a New York-bred son of Northern Afleet, has won once while finishing in the money in seven of nine starts. He was fifth in the San Rafael in January while making his lone graded stakes start to date. This will be his second start under the care of trainer David Hofmans.
The Affirmed will be run as the ninth of ten races on Saturday’s program at HollywoodPark. First post time is 1 p.m.
