INGLEWOOD, Calif. (August 12, 2011)—Seven of the eight fillies and mares entered in the $250,000 John C. Mabee, which will be run Sunday at Del Mar, have won at least one graded stakes at Hollywood Park.
A Grade II at 1 1/8 miles on turf, the Mabee is the ninth of 10 races Sunday. Post time at Del Mar is 2 p.m. Track gates at Hollywood Park open at 10:30 a.m. for simulcasts.
The lone female scheduled to participate in the Mabee without a stakes win at Hollywood Park is Wasted Tears. Owned and bred by trainer Bart Evans, the 6-year-old Najran mare returns to California in search of her 13th lifetime victory.
Fresh off wins at the recently concluded Spring/Summer meet are Celtic Princess and Malibu Pier.
Owned by breeder Coudelaria Jessica and trained by A.C. Avila, Celtic Princess was a clear winner of the Grade II Royal Heroine Mile July 4 at Hollywood Park. The 7-year-old Brazilian bred mare has won six of 15 and earned $330,624.
Trained by Carla Gaines for owner-breeder B. Wayne Hughes’ Spendthrift Farm LLC, Malibu Pier captured the Grade III Beverly Hills Handicap June 26. The win was the sixth in 11 outings for the 4-year-old daughter of Malibu Moon and increased her bankroll to $407,200.
The rest of the field and their stakes wins at Hollywood Park include Harmonious (2010 American Oaks), Cozi Rosie (2010 Senorita Stakes), Go Forth North (2010 Harold C. Ramser Sr. Handicap), Turning Top (2010 Redondo Beach Stakes and 2010 Beverly Hills Handicap) and Medaglia d’Amour (2010 Wilshire Handicap).
