INGLEWOOD, Calif. (June 15, 2012)—Siempre Mio, a son of Dixie Union, the sire of Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags, is scheduled to make his initial start for some new – and extremely famous – part owners Sunday at Betfair Hollywood Park.
Thanks to a Los Angeles Lakers Foundation charity auction April 24, Kobe Bryant and Pau Gasol, who has been a visitor to trainer Doug O’Neill’s stable at Betfair Hollywood Park, each own 25 percent of the 4-year-old, who will have five opponents in the $12,500 claimer at six furlongs. The race is the first of nine.
A winner twice in five starts, Siempre Mio, who will be ridden once more by Joy Scott, was scratched out of a much tougher spot May 26.
O’Neill, who also trains the California bred for Mark Verge’s Westsiderentals.com and Chris Quinn, said that day Siempre Mio was “coughing,’’ so the decision to scratch from the $54,000 allowance was made.
Scott was aboard when Siempre Mio went gate-to-wire against restricted $25,000 claimers in his most recent start March 31 at Santa Anita. Sunday’s race will be his first over a synthetic surface.
Post time Sunday is 1 p.m. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 9:55 a.m. for simulcasts.
