INGLEWOOD, Calif. (November 14, 2010)—Sister Dawn showed tenacity in the final eighth of a mile to score by a neck in the $62,000 Playa Del Rey Stakes Sunday at Hollywood Park.

Lady Dawn’s victory at 7-1 was one of several in the Pick Six, so there will be a carryover of $99,992 when racing resumes Thursday. Post time is 12:30 p.m. The Pick Six begins in the third race.

There is also a carryover in the Super High Five of $41,816. The Super High Five is offered each racing day in the final race.

After battling for the early advantage with Holding Her Ground while inside of that one, Sister Dawn was able to find a bit extra late under jockey Joel Rosario after being headed briefly by 7-5 favorite Mother Ruth.

In winning for the third time in her last four starts, Sister Dawn, a 3-year-old Indian Charlie filly out of the Strawberry Road mare Joi’s Flame, covered the six furlongs over Cushion Track in 1:09.94.

Owned by Ike and Dawn Thrash and trained by John Sadler, Sister Dawn is 4-for-9 lifetime. She’s earned $153,707.

The victory was the second in the Playa Del Rey for Sadler. He won the inaugural running in 2007 with Lady Gamer.

Not favored for only the second time in her career, Sister Dawn returned $16.40, $5.60 and $3.40. Mother Ruth, who was a bit slow to begin in her quest to win her second in a row for owner Ahmed Zayat and trainer Bob Baffert, paid $3 and $2.40. The show price on Silver Swallow, who finished 1 ¼ lengths behind Mother Ruth, was $2.60.

The only other time Silver Dawn had not been the betting choice in a race was in the Victory Ride, a Grade III, Aug. 28 at Saratoga. She finished seventh that day at 13-1 in a race captured by the Baffert-trained Rapport.

There will be simulcast wagering in Hollywood Park’s Player’s Club and Casino Wednesday. Gates open at 10:15 a.m.
