INGLEWOOD, Calif. (July 10, 2009) — Favorite Smooth Performer caught gritty pacesetter Grace Anatomy and second-choice Music Magic in the final strides to win Friday night’s $60,100 allowance feature under jockey Garrett Gomez at Hollywood Park.
Smooth Performer, making her second start following a ten-month layoff, covered 1 1/16 miles on Cushion Track in 1:44.02 to register her third win in 12 starts. She finished a half-length in front of Grace Anatomy and Music Magic, who dead-heated for second.
Smooth Performer, a 4-year-old filly trained by Clifford Sise Jr. and owned by John Spohler and Martin Wygod, paid $5.60, $2.40 and $2.80. Music Magic returned $2.20 and $2.80, while Grace Anatomy paid $2.20 and $2.60.
The winner’s share of $39,000 boosted Smooth Performer’s earnings to $182,900.
Victor Espinoza and apprentice jockey Christian Santiago Reyes each rode a pair of winners Friday.
