INGLEWOOD, Calif. (August 28, 2012)—Unusual Heatwave, who won the Snow Chief Stakes on California Gold Rush Day at Betfair Hollywood Park earlier this year, will try for his third victory of 2012 in the $100,000 El Cajon Friday at Del Mar.
Restricted to 3-year-olds at one mile over Polytrack, the El Cajon is the sixth of seven races. Post time Friday is 4 p.m. Track gates at Betfair Hollywood Park will open at 10 a.m. for simulcasts.
Owned by Ellen and Peter O. Johnson, Sr. and Teresa McWilliams and trained by Alexis Barba, Unusual Heatwave rallied from ninth in a field of 10 California breds to win the Snow Chief by a half-length April 28.
Fourth in the Grade III Affirmed Handicap and second in the grassy Tsunami Slew Stakes in his final two starts of the Spring/Summer meet, Unusual Heatwave was a winner in his return to Del Mar. The Unusual Heat colt out of the Candi’s Gold mare Miss Alphie defeated Rousing Sermon and five others in the Real Good Deal Aug. 3.
Successful in three of 12 with earnings of $400,392, Unusual Heatwave will be seeking his first victory against open company since his maiden score last Dec. 31 at Santa Anita.
