INGLEWOOD, Calif. (June 30, 2013)—So Brilliant was primed in his return from a lengthy layoff, winning the $57,250 feature (video) Sunday at Betfair Hollywood Park.

Racing for the first time since finishing fourth of five in an optional claimer last Oct. 28 at Santa Anita, the 4-year-old son of Medaglia d’Oro defeated 5-2 favorite Doyouseemecoming by 1 ¾ lengths under jockey Martin Garcia.

The second longest shot in the field of six at 6-1, So Brilliant completed the 6 ½ furlongs over Cushion Track in 1:15.86, the fastest time of the Spring/Summer meet for the distance. He paid $15.20, $7 and $5.

Owned by Arnold Zetcher LLC and trained by Hall of Famer Bob Baffert, So Brilliant pressed the pace set by Doyouseemecoming from the outside, got a short lead with less than an eighth of a mile to run, then pulled clear late.

Out of the Wekiva Springs mare Merry Me in Spring, So Brilliant has won three of five and earned $127,560. The gray is 2-for-2 over Cushion Track. His earlier victory came in the Grade III Hollywood Prevue Nov. 24, 2011.

Seeking his second victory of the meet after a 9-1 upset in a $59,064 allowance May 27, Doyouseemecoming finished 2 ¾ lengths in front of 4-1 shot Gladding. The runner-up returned $3.40 and $2.60 while the show price on Gladding was $3.60.

Completing the order of finish were High Test, American Act and Bank the Eight, who is also trained by Baffert.

With eight days remaining in the 49-day season, jockeys Rafael Bejarano, the defending Spring/Summer champion, and Joe Talamo are tied atop the standings. Both have 44 victories.

In the trainer’s race, John Sadler has a 24-20 lead over Mike Puype. Sadler has won three training titles at Betfair Hollywood Park – the Autumn meets in 2007 and 2009 and Spring/Summer in 2008.

Racing resumes Thursday. Post time for the 4th of July holiday program is 1 p.m. Track gates will open at 9:55 a.m. for simulcasts. General admission is free for veterans and active duty personnel – with military identification.

The Hollywood Park Casino will be open for dark day simulcasts Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Admission is free. The first simulcast goes at approximately 10:10 a.m.
