INGLEWOOD, Calif. (July 3, 2009) — Favorite Strawberry Tart burst into contention between horses early in the stretch and overhauled Jehan in the final sixteenth to win Friday night’s $100,000 Flawlessly Stakes by a half-length under jockey Martin Garcia at Hollywood Park.
The victory was the fourth in six starts for the promising 3-year-old filly — now perfect in two turf starts for trainer Jeff Bonde.
“I rode her with a lot of confidence,” Garcia said. “She didn’t show her usual speed last time, so I took her back and it worked out. So today I did the same thing. She broke real good and I took her back to make one run. When I asked her to go, she kicked home like a superstar.”
Strawberry Tart, winner of the Manhattan Beach for owners George and Mary Clare Schmitt here in her previous start, made it two-for-two on the Lakeside Turf Course as she covered one mile in 1:34.28. It was her first race around two turns.
“Jeff knows this filly very well and he was very confident she could get the two turns,” said assistant trainer Miguel Carranca. “His instructions were to just relax the filly and let her go in the stretch.”
Strawberry Tart, a daughter of Atticus, paid $6.40, $3.40 and $3.40 while banking $60,000 to raise her earnings to $152,622. Jehan returned $9 and $5.60, while the show payoff on Dash Dot Dash was $6.
