INGLEWOOD, Calif. (August 25, 2011)—Twirling Candy, third as the 11-10 favorite in the $500,000 Hollywood Gold Cup July 9, will try for his first win at 1 ¼ miles in the $1 million TVG Pacific Classic Sunday at Del Mar.

A Grade I, the Pacific Classic will be run for the 21st time and scheduled post time is 5:15 p.m. PDT. First post Sunday at Del Mar is 1 p.m. Track gates at Hollywood Park will open at 10:30 a.m. for simulcasts.

Trained by John Sadler for breeder Jenny Craig’s Family Trust, William Farish and Marty Wygod, Twirling Candy won the Californian at Hollywood Park prior to his narrow defeat behind First Dude and Game on Dude in the Gold Cup.

If successful Sunday, the 4-year-old son of 2003 Pacific Classic winner Candy Ride would become the second horse to win both the Californian and Pacific Classic in the same year, joining Skimming, who accomplished the double in 2001.

Tres Borrachos, the upset winner of the San Diego Handicap July 30 and improved since joining the barn of trainer Marty Jones, could become the fourth horse to win the Swaps Stakes and Pacific Classic.

Now owned by George Hicker, Tres Borrachos, a gelded son of Ecton Park, surprised Two Step Salsa and Colonel John in the 2008 Swaps. The last horse to win both races was Came Home (2002). The others to have completed the parlay are Free House (1997) and Best Pal (1991).

Acclamation, a two-time winner of the Jim Murray and Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicaps, will seek his first victory over a synthetic surface Sunday. The 5-year-old California bred son of Unusual Heat, owned by breeders Buddy and Judy Johnston and Peter and Mary Hilvers and trained by Don Warren, captured the Grade I Eddie Read July 23 on turf.

From inside out, the field for the Pacific Classic: Don Cavallo, Luis Contreras rides, 124 pounds; Jeranimo, Martin Pedroza, 124; Stately Victor, Mike Smith, 124; Tres Borrachos, Rafael Bejarano, 124; Acclamation, Patrick Valenzuela, 124; Setsuko, Victor Espinoza, 124; Great Warrior, Omar Berrio, 118; Bourbon Bay, Joe Talamo, 124; Game On Dude, Chantal Sutherland, 124; Twirling Candy, Joel Rosario, 124 and Quindici Man, Martin Garcia, 124.
