INGLEWOOD, Calif. (June 11, 2009) — Unbeaten filly Well Deserved turned back a determined bid by Repo through the stretch en route to a one-length victory under jockey Joel Rosario in Thursday’s $76,850 Cinderella Stakes at Hollywood Park.
Well Deserved covered 5 ½ furlongs on Cushion Track in a stakes record 1:02.97 while winning for the second time. The daughter of Cactus Ridge pulled away from favorite Southern Fireball at the quarter pole and then held off her stablemate in the final furlong.
Well Deserved, owned by Marc C. Ferrell and trained by David Hofmans, broke her maiden here May 1. The second choice at 2-1 in the Cinderella, she returned $6.60, $4 and $3.60. Repo paid $5.20 and $4.60, while the show payoff on Champagne d’Oro was $5. Southern Fireball finished fourth in the field of seven 2-year-old fillies.
The winner’s check of $43,110 boosted Well Deserved’s earnings to $70,710. The Kentucky-bred was purchased for $100,000 in March.
Rafael Bejarano rode three winners Thursday to gain the lead from Rosario atop the jockeys’ standings by a 46-45 margin. Victor Espinoza and Garrett Gomez each rode a pair of winners.
Racing resumes Friday with a 7:05 p.m. post time.
