INGLEWOOD, Calif. (August 8, 2012)—The late Bob Wheeler, who won 273 races at Hollywood Park, and Ghostzapper, who earned the first win of his brilliant career here, are among the 2012 inductees into the National Museum of Racing’s Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony will begin at 7:30 a.m. PDT Friday at the Fasig-Tipton Sales Pavilion in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

A trainer for well over half a century (1938-1992), Wheeler won 1,336 races. Of those, 51 were stakes victories at Hollywood Park, including five Hollywood Juvenile Championships, four Cinderellas and two Hollywood Gold Cups – Dotted Swiss (1960) and Cadiz (1963). He also doubled in the Hollywood Oaks, Hollywood Lassie – which is now known as the Landaluce – Milady, Railbird and Vanity Handicap.

Trained by the late Bobby Frankel and owned by Frank Stronach, Ghostzapper broke into the game with a nine length maiden victory Nov. 16, 2002 at Hollywood Park. The win was the first of nine – in only 11 starts – for the son of Awesome Again and the Relaunch mare Baby Zip.

An earner of $3,446,120, Ghostzapper went 4-for-4 in 2004, earning Horse of the Year and Champion Older Male honors. He climaxed his campaign with a record-setting victory in the Breeders’ Cup Classic. Ghostzapper ran the 1 ¼ miles at Lone Star Park in 1:59.02.

The other inductees are jockey John Velazquez, a two-time Eclipse Award winner as outstanding rider in 2004 and 2005, and trainer Roger Attfield, who has conditioned three Canadian Triple Crown winners – Izvestia, With Approval and Peteski.
