INGLEWOOD, Calif. (June 25, 2009) — Lightly-raced Yankee Station rallied from third at the top of the stretch under jockey David Flores to win Thursday’s $50,000 allowance feature by two lengths over favorite Speight the Halo at Hollywood Park.
Yankee Station, owned by Pam and Martin Wygod, covered 1 1/16 miles in 1:42.01 to win for the second time in five starts.
The 4-year-old colt, trained by John Shirreffs, paid $23.40, $8.60 and $5.60. Speight the Halo returned $3.60 and $3, while the show payoff on J P Jammer was $4.
Speight the Halo, a 3-year-old son of sprinter Speightstown, was attempting to earn a spot in the Swaps Stakes here July 18 with a victory. He set the fractions, but had no response when headed by Yankee Station nearing the sixteenth pole.
Yankee Station collected $30,000 with the victory, boosting his earnings to $79,120.
