INGLEWOOD, Calif. (July 19, 2009) — Zenyatta, who stretched her unbeaten streak to 11 with repeat victories in the Milady Handicap and Vanity Handicap, was voted Horse of the Meet in the annual media poll as the 55-day Spring/Summer Meet closed Sunday.
Zenyatta, owned by Jerry and Ann Moss, trained by John Shirreffs and ridden by Mike Smith, received eight of ten votes. Also voted Horse of the Meet when she won the Milady and Vanity in 2008, Zenyatta was a unanimous choice as older female.
The daughter of Street Cry notched career victory No. 11 as she came from off the pace under 129 pounds to score a 2 ½-length victory while being geared down in the closing yards of the Vanity. She spotted five rivals from 13 to 16 pounds while toting the most weight for a Vanity winner since Cascapedia in 1977.
Other unanimous winners were Hollywood Juvenile Championship victor Necessary Evil as 2-year-old filly; Hollywood Gold Cup winner Rail Trip as older male; Doug O’Neill as trainer; Joel Rosario as jockey, and Christian Santiago Reyes as apprentice jockey.
American Oaks champ Gozzip Girl was voted outstanding 3-year-old and 3-year-old filly and also shared female turf horse honors with Tuscan Evening.
Other winners were Necessary Evil as 2-year-old; Classical Slew as 2-year-old male; Swaps winner Misremembered as 3-year-old male; Charles Whittingham Memorial Handicap winner Midships as turf horse; Triple Bend winner Zensational as sprinter, and Roi Charmant as claiming horse.
